Invest in the Next Generation of Florence

Spotlight on Youth (S.O.Y.) is building young leaders in Florence — and we need partners who believe in what that's worth.

What Is Spotlight on Youth?

S.O.Y. is a youth development program serving ages 14–21 in the Florence community. Through mentorship, coaching, workshops, community service, and youth-led events, we help young people build confidence, leadership, and life skills — and discover a sense of purpose that carries them into adulthood.

It's not a one-off event. It's a structured, ongoing relationship between caring adults and the next generation.

The Need in Our Community

Right now, young people in Florence are carrying more than most adults realize:

  • Struggling in school with no one tracking their progress

  • Facing pressure, conflict, grief, or anxiety with nowhere safe to process it

  • Growing up surrounded by negative influences and few positive role models

  • Aging toward adulthood with no plan, no mentor, and no one asking "what do you want your future to look like?"

Left unaddressed, these gaps don't close on their own — they compound. A teen without mentorship or direction today becomes an adult without stability tomorrow, and the ripple reaches families, schools, and the wider community.

Every young person deserves someone in their corner. Too many don't have one.

How S.O.Y. Meets That Need

We built S.O.Y. around the belief that young people don't need to be labeled by their struggles — they need to be equipped to move past them.

Mentorship & Coaching Every participant is paired with caring adults who provide consistent, personal guidance — not a one-time pep talk, but an ongoing relationship built on trust.

Life Skills & Leadership Training Practical workshops on financial literacy, communication, conflict resolution, career exploration, and accountability — the skills schools often don't have time to teach.

Community Service & Youth Showcases Youth don't just receive support — they give back, practicing responsibility and leadership through real projects and public events.

The "Each One, Teach One" Model Our older participants (18–21) mentor the younger group (14–17), creating a generational bridge. Youth aren't just being helped — they're learning how to help others. This is how one strong participant becomes the reason five more succeed.

Led by People Who've Lived It S.O.Y. is led by Denise Flippen, a nurse and survivor whose own story includes hardship and a hard-won path to purpose, and coordinated by Darren Hanna, who has seen firsthand how family struggles and community pressure shape young lives in Florence. This program isn't theoretical — it's built by people who understand exactly what these youth are up against.

Where Your Support Goes

Every dollar helps us reach more youth and go deeper with the ones we already serve. Sponsorship funds:

  • Program materials & workshop curriculum

  • Mentor training and mentorship resources

  • Community service projects

  • Youth showcases and events

  • Food and supplies for program sessions

  • The day-to-day operating needs that keep S.O.Y. running with excellence

More money, more problems solved. When you invest in S.O.Y., you're not funding a program — you're funding future leaders, stronger families, and a stronger Florence.
