What Is Plate & Play?
Plate & Play is C.A.V.E.'s premier community outreach program — a mobile initiative built to reclaim the window between 4 PM and 6 PM in North Florence, the hours when kids are most exposed to negative influences and community violence.
We launched in North Florence to align with the City's revitalization efforts. But while the City focuses on buildings and infrastructure, C.A.V.E. is pouring into the people. Our goal is to make sure revitalization isn't just a moment — it's a sustained investment in human potential.
It's also more than outreach. Plate & Play is C.A.V.E.'s primary fundraising engine, directly powering three signature programs we deliver in schools.
The Need in North Florence
Every day between 4 and 6 PM, kids in high-crime, underserved North Florence neighborhoods face a choice most of us never had to make: go home to an empty house, or find something — or someone — on the street.
Structured after-school resources are often non-existent in these neighborhoods
Community violence and negative influences peak during exactly these hours
Without a visible, consistent alternative, kids default to whatever's available on the streets
This is the gap Plate & Play exists to close.
How We Meet the Need
Plate & Play doesn't wait for kids to come to a building — we go to them.
A Mobile, Visible Safe Haven We show up directly in the neighborhood during the highest-risk hours, offering a consistent, positive presence kids can count on.
Meals + Mentorship Every stop combines a hot meal with real relationship-building — because you can't reach a kid's mind before you've met their basic needs.
An Intergenerational Model Led by an unlikely and powerful partnership: 11-year-old entrepreneur Talena Johnson of Talena's Golden Grill, and Ms. Cupcake of Piece of Cake Entertainment. It's proof that leadership and impact aren't reserved for adults — this is youth serving youth, community feeding community.
Enrichment That Sticks Through leadership foundations, creative and critical thinking activities, and character/emotional development, kids build the resilience and decision-making skills to navigate their environment — not just survive it.
Fueling Our Deeper Work: The Community Link
Plate & Play isn't just what happens on the street — it's what makes our in-school work possible. Every "Community Link" you support helps fund three signature programs inside schools:
STEM Innovative Engineers — Building tomorrow's technical leaders through high-level problem-solving and modern teamwork skills
Workforce Development — Cultivating entrepreneurship, intrapreneurship, and servant leadership — students who rise and lift their community with them
SEL: The Author's Club — Giving youth the social-emotional tools to reclaim, write, and confidently share their own life story
